Professor Gerard is looking for a student to help with a research project documenting the adoption of public policies designed to support laid off workers around the world since the early 1900s. The idea is to understand when countries adopt different types of policies along their development path. Previous research assistants already collected the necessary data for several countries. The goal is to now extend the dataset to the rest of the world. Given the nature of this project, the work will entail mostly gathering information from international publications and through careful analysis of countries’ legislations, and creating a dataset in excel. Candidates should thus be very organized and detail-oriented. There might also be some small data analysis down the road (in STATA or R), once the dataset is fully completed. Being able to read several languages might be useful. If you are interested and available for the summer, please send a short email of introduction, your Columbia transcript, and your CV to fgerard@columbia.edu
