The Department of Statistics is proud to announce the Summer 2022 Public Interest Technology Data Science Corps (PIT-DSC) application is open! PIT-DSC, a collaboration between Columbia University and Lehman College, focuses on research questions that have obvious societal impact. Project ideas are provided by New York City governmental agencies and nonprofit organizations seeking to improve the lives of New Yorkers.

What You’ll Do

Columbia University, Barnard College, and Lehman College undergraduate interns will work together, in teams, on data science projects to improve the lives of New York City residents in underserved communities. PIT-DSC Interns will participate in the following activities:

  • Lehman – Columbia Data Science Bootcamp: June 6-10, 2022
  • PIT Data Science Project: June 13 – August 6, 2022 (20 hours a week, approximately)
  • Interns will receive a $4,200 stipend.

The final project roster will be ready by May 2022 and we anticipate the program format to be hybrid. Depending on Covid-19 restrictions, the final project showcase in August will potentially be an in-person or hybrid event at the Lehman College campus.

Who We’re Looking For

  • A cohort of 10  undergraduate students from Columbia and/or Barnard interested in using their data science skills to create a positive societal impact.
  • Experience with R or Python is preferred but not required.
  • Applicants must be in good academic standing and graduate after August, 2022.
  • All undergraduate majors are welcome!
