The NYU Furman Center is a joint center of the New York University School of Law and Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service that advances research and debate on housing, neighborhoods, and urban policy. The following research position is available:

Pre-Doctoral Research Fellow

Position Description: The NYU Furman Center invites applications for a full-time pre-doctoral research fellow position. The Furman Center, jointly housed at NYU’s School of Law and its Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, is a leading academic research center devoted to the public policy aspects of land use, real estate development, and housing. Examples of current research projects include: How does access to free legal counsel change outcomes of housing court cases and evictions in New York City? Does receiving housing assistance improve educational and health outcomes for children? What policies and practices increase the ability of recipients of housing vouchers to use those voucher, particularly in lower-poverty, higher opportunity neighborhoods?  

The fellow will work directly with Furman Center faculty directors Ingrid Gould Ellen and Kathy O’Regan as well as others on the Center’s research team, which includes full-time research staff and affiliated faculty, current doctoral students, post-doc and legal fellows, as well as current Master’s students. The fellow will conduct a variety of tasks that help prepare them for graduate school, such as analyzing data, developing statistical models, writing up results and editing research papers, and making presentations. The fellow will also be invited to attend a variety of policy and research seminars at the Furman Center and across the university. The fellowship is an ideal step in preparing for a doctoral program in public policy, economics or other social sciences. 

Qualifications: Applicants should be completing (or have completed) a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, have strong quantitative and writing skills, and some experience with empirical methods. Research experience is preferred, as is programming experience in Stata, SAS, and/or R. Successful fellows can come from a range of backgrounds and majors, and have varied experience with coding; this position is meant to deepen those skills in a full-time research setting. Fellows ideally work for two years prior to attending graduate school, and would start in July 2020.
