Language Resources

Students who are non-native speakers of English may elect to take courses to improve their English language proficiency. The University offers a variety of resources for refining one’s written and/or oral communication skills.

The American Language Program (ALP)

The Columbia American Language Program (ALP) offers coursework designed to develop students’ grammatical skills, fluency and pronunciation, listening and reading comprehension, and writing ability. Students may enroll in ALP courses at no additional tuition costs to them. Please visit their website for course scheduling.

ALP requires completion of an online placement test in order to assess your eligibility to enroll. You can gain access to this test by e-mailing the Program Advisor at alp@columbia.edu.

The Language Resource Center

The Language Resource Center (LRC), located in IAB 353, administers the Language Maintenance Tutorial program. Every Language Maintenance Tutorial (LMT) is instructed by a Columbia graduate student, and meets for 10 sessions of 90 minutes each over the course of the semester.

An additional fee is assessed for participation in this program ($30 application fee and $650 tutorial fee). Please visit their website for more details.
