The Expanding Diversity in Economics Summer Institute (EDE) is a three-week program that was launched in 2021 with the goal of encouraging more students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds to study economics. This is a unique opportunity open to undergraduate students from across the US. Hosted by the Becker Friedman Institute for Economics (BFI) at the University of Chicago, participants were exposed to a wide range of scholars, including Clark medal recipient and Freakonomics author Steve Levitt, Nobel laureates Lars Peter Hansen and Richard Thaler, Marianne Bertrand, and more. You can learn more about the inaugural cohort of students here, and see a full listing of the faculty and guest speakers who engaged in the 2021 program.

The 2022 EDE Summer Institute will run June 6 – 26, including one week of virtual skill-building followed by two weeks of on-campus programming. BFI covers the costs of housing, travel and meals, and participants receive a stipend of $1,200 for completing the program (Pell Grant students receive a stipend of $2,400). We understand that there are opportunity costs involved with taking three weeks out of the summer and want this program to be open to all students, regardless of socioeconomic background.

We welcome students to visit the EDE website to learn more or start an application. We are currently accepting applications for summer 2022 on a rolling basis until March 1, 2022.
