Development and Political Economics
SF Bay Area PhD Student Conference
Stanford University, April 12th, 2019

This event aims to give PhD students a chance to present their research and learn about what other students are working on in applied micro topics related to development economics and political economy. Participants will also interact with each other as well as faculty members in an informal and relaxed environment. The event is generously supported by the Stanford Center on Global Poverty and Development, and sponsored by the departments of Economics of Stanford University and UC Berkeley. It will take place at Stanford University – Stanford, CA on Friday, April 12th, 2019.
Deadline to apply: Monday, February 18th, 2019, 11.59pm PST

Application
The ideal candidate is a PhD candidate in Economics that is doing primarily appliedresearch in development economics and political economy. PhD students from related departments like political science and business schools are also welcome. You are asked to submit a working paper, which must be single-authored or co-authored with other students, by:
• Monday, February 18th, 11.59pm PST.
Papers co-authored with faculty will be considered as long as it is clear that the primary author(s) is a PhD student.

The selection committee will consist of a panel of Stanford and Berkeley junior faculty and PhD students.
• A decision will be made by Monday, March 11th, 2019.
• You will then be required to confirm participation by March 18th, 2019.
If selected to present, you may also be asked to be a discussant for one of the other selected papers and will have to attend the full event.
The application should be sent via email to devpecconference@gmail.com, with subject “Bay Area PhD Conference Application”. Please include the working paper, your full name, your institution, program, and year in the program. Strong preference will be given to PhD students who are currently not on the job market.

Funding
We are able to offer partial travel funding to all selected students travelling from outside the Bay Area. We will provide $300 per person to reimburse flight costs. Only commuting costs will be reimbursed to students traveling from nearby universities. All the expenses will be reimbursed after the event. More information will be provided after participants have been selected.
Stanford and Berkeley graduate students will be happy to provide free accommodation, which will otherwise have to be arranged by the participants at their own cost.

Schedule
This will be a full-time one-day event featuring 6 student presentations with discussions, and a keynote talk by a faculty member.
2 Each presentation will be allocated a total of 35 minutes, and it will be followed by a 10-minute discussion led by another student.

12.30-1.30pm Lunch
1.30-5pm Presentations
5-6pm Keynote talk
6-9pm Dinner with faculty
