Padma Desai awarded honorary doctor of letters degree
Padma Desai, Gladys and Roland Harriman Professor of Comparative Economic Systems Emerita at Columbia University, is a leading scholar of the Soviet Union, Russia, and Transition Economies. Desai was a pioneering female student in economics at Harvard University and received her Ph.D. there in 1960. She came to Columbia in 1980 after spending time at Delhi University and at the Harvard Russian Research Center. Over the course of her academic career she has contributed a robust body of scholarship and commentary including 15 books and monographs and a numerous articles. Desai held the Gladys and Roland Harriman Professorship with considerable distinction for over two decades until her retirement in 2014. She was President of the Association for Comparative Economic Studies in 2001.
