Desktop support for Department of Economics graduate students is provided by Columbia University Information Technology (CUIT). All hardware and software issues should be directed to the CUIT Help Desk at 212-854-1919 or e-mailed to askcuit@columbia.edu.
Software
Columbia University Information Technology (CUIT) maintains an online repository of university- approved software. The recommended operating system for all university machines is Windows 7 Professional. Columbia maintains site licenses for Windows 7, 8, and 10. The university provides Symantec Endpoint Protection and several versions of Microsoft Office for affiliated users. You must enter your University ID (UNI) and password before you can download any university-supported software.
The Department of Economics offers free licenses for its graduate students for both MatLab and ArcGIS. To request a license for either software, please e-mail the department System Administrator (econsa@columbia.edu). The latest version of SAS can often be purchased at a discount. More information on mathematical/statistical software available for purchase can be found here.
Computer Labs
CUIT computer labs provide a combination of workstations and/or ColumbiaNet kiosks. These computing facilities provide users with valid accounts access to a range of software. The major computing platforms in the labs and clusters are Microsoft Windows workstations, Apple Macintosh workstations, and Linux kiosks.
Windows and Macintosh stations require UNI account login, and provide access to e-mail, web, and standard applications such as word processors and spreadsheet software. Additional courseware applications are also installed so students can complete their academic coursework. These computing facilities are in various locations throughout campus.
