Our M.A. program emphasizes a technical and rigorous approach to the study of economic theory. As such, applicants will be evaluated on the quality and breadth of their undergraduate preparation for the study of economics at the graduate level.
Applications for admission to the M.A. program are considered for the Fall term only.

Note: All applications are processed by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Columbia University. Please do not send any application materials directly to the Department of Economics.
International Students
International Students & Scholars Office (ISSO)

Work Authorization: CPT & OPT
As a STEM-designated program, F-1 visa holders within the M.A. program are eligible to apply for the F-1 STEM OPT Extension. This designation enables students to apply for an additional 24 months of OPT authorization, in addition to the first year of OPT.
Our program also offers students the opportunities to gain off-campus work authorization through Curricular Practical Training (CPT).
Language Resources
Students who are non-native speakers of English may elect to take courses to improve their English language proficiency. The University offers a variety of resources for refining one’s written and/or oral communication skills. Please visit this page to learn more.
Student Life – Living in NYC and the Columbia Area
Columbia University is located in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of New York City, an area dotted with an array of restaurants, coffee shops, bars, theaters, parks, and more. The Morningside campus is also just under a mile from the northwest entrance to Central Park, allowing students easy access to New York’s most iconic park.
Arts Initiative
Through the Arts Initiative at Columbia University, students gain free access to over 30 New York area museums, in addition to discounted tickets to Broadway and Off-Broadway shows.
Columbia Intercampus Shuttle
The University provides free shuttle bus routes between the Morningside Campus, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, the Studebaker Building at the Manhattanville Campus, the Medical Center, Harlem Hospital, and the George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal
Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA)
New York City mass transit operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, across all five boroughs, making it the largest public transport system in the United States. Just a few steps away from the 116th Street/Columbia University subway station on the 1- train line, Columbia is also easily accessible from other stations.

Off-Campus Housing Assistance
Off-Campus Housing Assistance (OCHA) aids Columbia students in their search for rental housing in the New York Metropolitan area. OCHA manages a database of available rooms and apartments, and also provides information on the rental real estate market in New York City. Additionally, OCHA offers one-on-one housing search counseling.
