Mini Course Series, Part 4: “Discrimination and Systemic Inequality“

Date: Wednesday, March 5, 2025
Time: 2:00pm – 4:00pm
Location: IAB 1120
Abstract:
Almost no aspect of the American economy can be fully understood without considering race.  Similarly American music, literature, entertainment, sports, politics, dating and marriage patterns, health, cuisine, and humor are all unimaginable without considering race.  Many economists have written about race, but the field structure of economics means that these writings are separated from one another and sometimes inconsistent.  It is possible to get an MA or a PhD from this program and many other excellent programs without ever hearing a full lecture or doing a problem set entirely concentrated on race.

This splintering has unfortunate consequences for the profession.  The American racial system is a general equilibrium system.  What happens in the marriage market, for instance, doesn’t stay in the marriage market; it has consequences for health, wealth, education, crime, housing, and inter-generational mobility.  Because this is a general equilibrium system, you will never fully grasp it or effectively plan reforms if all you ever study are one or two partial equilibria.  This mini course tries to get you thinking about general equilibrium.
