What is the Mitsubishi UFJ Trust Scholarship?

Each year, the Mitsubishi UFJ Trust Scholarship Foundation awards a full scholarship (tuition and expenses) to one Columbia student who wishes to study at a university or college in Japan. This year’s scholarship is for applicants who are interested in studying in Japan for the academic year 2026-2027.

 

Who is eligible?

All matriculated Columbia University graduate and undergraduate students are eligible to apply.

Students must:

  • be 35 years of age or younger
  • lack an adequate financial base to support his or her intended study in Japan

 

What types of programs are included?

The applicant shall aim to enroll in either an undergraduate, graduate, or doctoral program at a university or college in Japan.

 

Do I need to be an Economics or Business major?

All majors are eligible to apply. Past applicants reflect a wide range of studies (e.g., psychology, East Asian studies, business, political science).

 

Is there assistance with airfare?

The Center on Japanese Economy and Business at Columbia Business School will provide assistance up to $2,000 with airfare between NYC and Japan.

Please note that the successful applicant will need to apply directly to the Japanese university of his/her choice for admission.

 

About Columbia University Travel Compliance: Undergraduate students must comply with the Undergraduate International Travel Policy, and other travelers (including graduate students) must comply with the International Travel Planning Policy. For any country with an ISOS Travel Risk Rating of Medium, High, and/or Extreme, and any country with an ISOS Elevated Evacuation Status, a tiered review and approval process will be required. Please note, all affiliates are required to register Columbia-related international travel in ISOS MyTrips. Japan does not have this status as of January 2026, but if there are changes in status, this opportunity will be revisited.
