Professor Ashley Swanson, an economics professor in the Business School, is looking to hire 4 student researchers for a new research project that she is undertaking.

She is working on two projects with similar data needs: (1) on the classification of medical devices across databases, and (2) on the tracking of medical device firm mergers over time across databases. I am looking for a team of RAs to match a transactions database of hip and knee implants to publicly available data from the FDA and UN, and subsequently to work with a pre-doctoral team leader to create a panel database on med tech M&A using data from the FDA and several commercial databases with different variables and coverage rules. She will supply the core data, so the RA tasks will include the application of machine learning and matching algorithms as well as some manual validation. Ideal candidate has experience with Stata (for data manipulation) and fuzzy matching. More work will likely be available for those that are a good match.

Required technical skills:  Proficient in Stata.  Ideal candidate has experience building panel data sets, data cleaning, and fuzzy matching.  Machine learning experience is a plus.

Educational requirements:  Must be a current student.  MS students preferred – experienced undergrads will be considered.

Time commitment: 10 hours/week for 4 weeks

Pay rate:  $20/hour

How to apply: Please email current resume and a brief message (1 or 2 sentences) stating how your experience is relevant to this task to Professor Ashley Swanson  at ats2180@gsb.columbia.edu.
