Columbia Economics Announces New Website Launch

The new and completely redesigned website offers visitors richer insight into the Department’s research and resources

New York, New York – The Department of Economics is proud to launch our newly redesigned website, econ.columbia.edu.  The primary objectives of our site development effort were functionality, style and layout.  “We are excited about our new website launch and the robust information it provides faculty and students,” said Bernard Salanié, Professor and Chair of the Department of Economics.  “We believe that this new comprehensive website will allow our users to have a very informative experience as we continue to grow and increase our presence online.”

In addition to the changed design and layout of the pages, new functions have been implemented.  “We focused on simplifying our content and increasing visibility of our programs and research,” said Eric Vlach, Systems Administrator in the Department of Economics.  “The new design allows streamlined menus, clear navigation, and a responsive layout for all devices.”

Created with faculty and students firmly in mind, visitors can now benefit from richer online content that is easier to navigate and share with others, which means:

  • Better student recruitment platform
  • Clearer, more intuitive structure
  • Special views allow for sortable faculty, student and staff directories, slider features, and announcements for internal users
  • Additional features including a resource section, fillable forms, donation links, clear and intuitive menu structure, global site search, password protected pages, and mobile responsive layout

About the Department of Economics

The Department of Economics offers a general economics major, in addition to five interdisciplinary majors structured to suit the interests and professional goals of a heterogeneous student body.  All of the undergraduate programs have different specific requirements but share the common structure of core theoretical courses that provide the foundation for higher-level elective courses culminating in a senior seminar.  Graduate students receive training within an outstanding research environment, supported by members of faculty who are leading research in their fields.

In 2017, the Department offered 42 undergraduate courses.  A total of 4765 students were enrolled, 742 in the Department’s majors.  The M.A. program provides a technical and rigorous approach to the study of economics.  In addition, the doctoral program receives approximately 1,000 applications each year for an incoming class of roughly 25 students.  The Department has played a prominent role in the development of economic thought.  It will continue to through its faculty and students, and contribute to a better understanding of economic activities and the elaboration of policy.
