Call for Editors
The Journal of Sino-American Affairs (JOSA) is an independent student publication founded by undergraduates at Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley to foster a deeper understanding of the U.S.-China relationship and its relevance to international affairs. Given recent tensions between the United States and China, JOSA was founded to connect students from across the globe to track the evolution of the Sino-American relationship in the 21st century and how it is shaping international politics, economics, and culture. We are looking for editors for each of the sections below for Spring 2019-Spring 2020:
Section Descriptions:
I. Political Culture: Political culture articles highlight norms and attitudes that dictate political, economic, and business affairs between the United States and China. Specifically, they should set an ideological basis for discussion on politico-economic institutions (i.e. policy, law, financial/market, etc.) affected by U.S.-China relations or that dictate U.S.-China relations. Political culture pieces explain and illustrate the significance of concepts like the “American Dream” or “Chinese Dream” that may influence or encapsulate specific policies relevant to Sino-American relations.
II. Political Science & Political Economy: Political science articles highlight political processes, institutions, and civil society relevant to Sino-American affairs. Political science pieces help readers understand how policy and legal institutions shape recent political events, and how/why those institutions have been designed. Political economy pieces specifically focus on market institutions (i.e. banks, state-owned enterprises, etc.) that shape Sino-American relations, or market institutions central to domestic economic growth or decline in the U.S. or China. Students are encouraged to discuss current events within a historical framework, using historical context to explain recent phenomena in politics.
III. Economics & Business: Economics pieces examine specific macro/microeconomic policies and trends that affect the domestic status quo in China or the United States, or that play a central role in dictating U.S.-China relations. Articles focus on the growth or decline of certain industries, historical drivers of economic growth and interdependence in both countries, industry collaboration and competition, and the effects of changing U.S.-Chinese economic ties on living standards, growth, and the political landscape of other nations.
In addition to editors for the above sections, JOSA is also looking for a Marketing Director and a Production Director to lead the process of soliciting submissions and putting together the final publication.
