Have you ever considered studying economics? How about adjacent fields such as policy or political science? Would you be interested to learn more about paths to PhDs in these fields? If you’re curious about any of the above areas, then the below invitation is just for you!

Students in the Sustainable Development and Economics PhD programs at Columbia invite you to a virtual information session on economics and economics-adjacent PhDs. The goal of the event is to demystify the “hidden curriculum” of the path to the PhD and to discuss common intermediate steps towards a PhD, including RA-ships, master’s degrees, private- and public-sector jobs, and more.

Given the lack of diversity in economics, the event is primarily aimed at groups underrepresented in economics and related fields—specifically Black, Latinx, Native American, and other people of color, as well as first-generation college students. But all curious students—regardless of identity, concentration, school year, and post-graduate plans—are welcome. Please save this event in your calendars and share with your friends as well.

The agenda for the event is the following:

  • Welcome and overview
  • Keynote address by Professor Sandra Black
  • Panel of current Economics and Sustainable Development PhD students sharing their different paths to the PhD
  • Breakout rooms with panel speakers and other PhD students at Columbia where participants can ask further questions
