SUMMARY:Part 2: “Homothetic Non-CES Demand Systems with Some Applications” with Professor Kiminori Matsuyama
DESCRIPTION:Part 2: “Homothetic Non-CES Demand Systems with Some Applications” with Professor Kiminori Matsuyama Thursday\, November 6\, 2025  (Two-part Mini Course Series\, sponsored by the Program for Economic Research) \n\nPER Mini Course Instructor: Professor Kiminori Matsuyama\n \nProfessor of Economics\, Northwestern University \nKiminori Matsuyama\, Professor of Economics at Northwestern University\, will be visiting Columbia to host a two-part mini course series on “Homothetic Non-CES Demand Systems with Some Applications.” Please see below for detailed information and registration instructions. \n\nMini Course Series\, Part 2\nDate: Thursday\, November 6\, 2025 Time: 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm Location: 1027 International Affairs Building (IAB) \nAbstract:  \nThe CES demand system is widely used as a building block in business cycles theory\, economic growth and development\, international trade and other general equilibrium fields\, because it has many knifeedge properties\, which help to keep the analysis tractable in the presence of many goods and factors. However\, this also makes it hard to tell which properties of CES are responsible for certain results. Moreover\, it is necessary to relax some of them for certain applications. I recently published two review articles (ARE 2023; ARE 2025)\, which discuss several classes of non-CES aggregators\, each of which removes some properties of CES and keeps the rest to introduce some flexibility while retaining the tractability of CES as much as possible. In this mini-lecture series\, I will discuss some selected applications of such non-CES demand systems. \n\nPlease note that registration is required to attend this event. To register for this mini course\, please fill out this form. \nLight refreshments will be served. \n
