DESCRIPTION:\n\n\nPart 1: “AI and Unstructured Data for Measurement and Estimation” with Professor Stephen Hansen Monday\, November 10\, 2025  (Three-part Mini Course Series\, sponsored by the Program for Economic Research) \n\nPER Mini Course Instructor: Professor Stephen Hansen\n \nProfessor of Economics\, University College London \nStephen Hansen\, Professor of Economics at University College London\, will be visiting Columbia to host a three-part mini-course series on “AI and Unstructured Data for Measurement and Estimation.” Please see below for detailed information and registration instructions. \n\nMini Course Series\, Part 1\nDate: Monday\, November 10\, 2025 Time: 10:00 am – 11:30 am Location: 1027 International Affairs Building (IAB) \nAbstract: This lecture briefly reviews traditional methods for text-as-data analysis in economics based on word counts. We then introduce word embeddings\, which represent words as low-dimensional vectors that capture semantic relationships. Next\, we discuss how modern Large Language Models combine word embeddings to generate word predictions. Throughout\, we discuss economic applications of the methods. \n\nPlease note that registration is required to attend this event.
