SUMMARY:"Defining Race and Its Complexities" with Professor Dan O'Flaherty
DESCRIPTION:\n“Defining Race and Its Complexities” with Professor Dan O’Flaherty\n(Part 1 of a four-part Mini Course series\, sponsored by the Program for Economic Research)\n \nPER Mini Course Instructor\, Professor Dan O’Flaherty\nProfessor of Economics at Columbia University \nDan O’Flaherty\, Professor of Economics at Columbia University\, will host a four-part mini course series on the topic of “Race in the U.S.: What Economists Need to Find Out.” Please see the detailed information below for further course information and to RSVP. \nMini Course Series\, Part 1: “Defining Race and Its Complexities“ \nDate: Wednesday\, Jan. 29th\nTime: 2:00pm – 4:00pm\nLocation: IAB 1120\n\n\nAbstract:\n\n Almost no aspect of the American economy can be fully understood without considering race.  Similarly American music\, literature\, entertainment\, sports\, politics\, dating and marriage patterns\, health\, cuisine\, and humor are all unimaginable without considering race.  Many economists have written about race\, but the field structure of economics means that these writings are separated from one another and sometimes inconsistent.  It is possible to get an MA or a PhD from this program and many other excellent programs without ever hearing a full lecture or doing a problem set entirely concentrated on race.\n   This splintering has unfortunate consequences for the profession.  The American racial system is a general equilibrium system.  What happens in the marriage market\, for instance\, doesn’t stay in the marriage market; it has consequences for health\, wealth\, education\, crime\, housing\, and inter-generational mobility.  Because this is a general equilibrium system\, you will never fully grasp it or effectively plan reforms if all you ever study are one or two partial equilibria.  This mini course tries to get you thinking about general equilibrium. \n\n  \nPlease note that an RSVP is required to attend this event. Please click here to RSVP.\n\nLight refreshments will be served.\n\n
