Mathieu Karim Sabbagh, Named Editor-In-Chief of Columbia Economic Review (CER)

June 3, 2019

New York, NY – Mathieu Karim Sabbagh is the new editor-in-chief of the Columbia Economics Review (CER), a journal led, organized, and operated by undergraduate students at Columbia University across multiple disciplines.

Columbia Economic Review (CER) is the oldest undergraduate economics journal in the United States. It is led by a dedicated team of undergraduates who jointly maintain its content. “Through our journal, digital content, speaker series, and essay writing competitions, our goal has always been to showcase how pressing societal concerns intersect within the economics field,” explained Mathieu Karim Sabbagh, President and Editor-in-Chief of CER. “We’re constantly looking for new ways to illustrate the importance of undergraduate involvement in academic research. Our efforts to organize a speaker series on economic justice this coming Fall stems directly from this objective.”

The incoming managing board also include: Neel Puri, Sinet Chelagat, Ignacio Lopez Gaffney, Hallie Gruder, Devyani Goel, Philip Jang, Jenna Karp, Blaine Helleloid, Gabriel Multedo, and Jessica Lu.

The journal was founded in 2009. In 2014, it launched its online magazine, featuring short-form content from staff writers across all four undergraduate schools. Similarly, the CER has launched numerous engaging competitions within the field, including an environmental policy challenge and a high school essay contest. “Innovation has been central to the CER’s development in recent years,” he added.

CER is sponsored by the Program for Economic Research (PER), and the Institute for Social and Economic Research Policy (ISERP).

Sabbagh is a senior in Columbia College studying mathematics, statistics, and political science. His academic interests include developmental and trade economics, particularly the emergence of newly-industrialized countries. He is also chair of the student governing body.
