The Committee on Global Thought seeks PhD candidates (post MPhil) to help M.A. in Global Thought students whose first language is not English develop the prose and compelling argumentation of their 35-page M.A. essays. Based on their own primary and secondary research, M.A. essays offer students’ original insights on specific topics/case studies of global significance.

After training with CGT’s advising staff and closely reviewing students’ drafts, advising assistants will meet periodically with M.A. students to discuss the development of their work, and to ensure that their arguments are sound and well grounded in scholarly evidence. After M.A. students submit their drafts on March 25th, advising assistants will help them refine their prose. M.A. students must submit the final versions of their essays on April 22nd.

Throughout the process, advising assistants will meet with CGT’s full-time M.A. advising staff for direction and support. The short-term position will start in late February and end on April 22nd. Each advising assistant will be required to complete a total of 35 hours of work.

Advising assistants will be responsible for ensuring that writing within the M.A. essays meets the standards of academic excellence required by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Training in economics or sociology is preferred.

Applicants should send their C.V. and a writing sample of about 5 double-spaced pages to Dr. Tori Gross at vgg2108@columbia.edu .
