The Carroll Round Steering Committee invites all interested students at Columbia University to submit applications for the 20th Carroll Round Conference. Unfortunately, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Steering Committee ultimately elected to cancel this year’s 19th Carroll Round Conference.

The Conference provides a unique forum for the world’s best undergraduate students studying international economics and political economy to present and discuss their original research. In the past years we were extraordinarily impressed by the work of representatives from Columbia University, including Paul-Angelo Dell’Isola, Omeed Maghzian, Rafael Schwalb, and Shambhavi Tiwari. At the Conference, participants have an unparalleled opportunity to engage in an academic environment and converse with world-renowned economists in an intimate setting. The Steering Committee believes that this is an experience that all undergraduates, including the Class of 2020, should have the opportunity to participate in. As such, we have made the unprecedented decision to open next year’s Bicentennial Anniversary Conference to members of this year’s graduating class.

The 20th Conference, to be held April 22nd through 25th, 2021, will bring together top undergraduates, prominent academics, and policymakers in presentations, discussions, and speeches. We are happy to say that we will be hosting Nobel Laureate and former Chief Economist and Senior Vice President of the World Bank, Paul Romer, as the 20th Conference’s keynote speaker. New York Times best-selling author Dr. Seth Stephens-Davidowitz will also be delivering remarks at the 20th Conference.

We are seeking submissions of journal-length articles to be submitted by a final deadline of June 15th, 2020 from members of the Class of 2020. Decisions will be returned by the applications committee in the autumn of 2020. The window for applications from members of the Class of 2021 will remain open until the spring of 2021. A direct link to the application form can be found online.

Since the Carroll Round’s inception, we have underscored the importance of international economics research. Although this sub-field remains the focus, the Steering Committee is also willing to consider exemplary papers on other topics in economics. That being said, we may request such papers include an international component in the scope of presentations. For instance, if an article is about the U.S. education system, it might make policy recommendations for the education systems of countries that are similar to the United States.

Cognizant of the evolving the situation with respect to the COVID-19 pandemic, travel restrictions, and the commitments of graduating students over the course of the next 12 months, the Steering Committee will be regularly updating our website. Additionally, both my successor and I will be available at this address to resolve any issues about the Conference or the applications process. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

The Steering Committee eagerly looks forward to reading students’ work and congratulates the Class of 2020 for their academic achievements despite the present, trying circumstances.
